Moana: Disney's Unapologetic Feminist.

When you think of Disney movies, you think of princesses, songs, and the "happily ever after". How many of your happily ever afters are centered around a significant other? And Disney's? (Uhm, ALL OF THEM) Until now! Moana is the feminist millennials have been begging Disney for, for ages.

Moana is an independent feminist from the start of the movie, going off on her own as the ocean chooses her for a very important task, no spoilers here! Moana shows throughout the movie that finding yourself, and your true purpose is the key to a powerful woman.

To put it nicely, Moana is a take-no-shit Hawaiian sixteen year-old, who forces Maui (Dwayne, the Rock, Johnson) to be her sidekick in her epic adventure. Not only does Moana have no love interest, she also refuses to call herself a princess.

So many reasons cause Moana to be the first of her kind for Disney, subsequently creating a new era for Disney films. Moana isn't abnormally petite, nor does she rely on anyone but herself. Her motives are to help her people, and to find herself while also helping everyone in the movie find themselves as well.

Moana is the type of protagonists we as a culture need. Congrats Disney on making a film that I would be proud to have my future children aspire to be! Check out this song Moana sings, proving her limitless abilities, also it will undoubtedly get stuck in your head.
