Powerful Poets: Rupi Kaur

You may recognize her by her beautiful poetry, or by her simple linear drawings, but Rupi Kaur is a true feminist poet. With her bold and brilliant writing style, Rupi Kaur brings female issues, problems, and beauty to the forefront of her book titled Milk and Honey. Divided into four chapters, Kaur has a beautiful way of communicated her thoughts about life in a way that all can relate to.

As a feminist poet, Kaur also is able to put herself very much into this work. Growing up an immigrant from India to Canada, Rupi is able to express the hardships of growing up in a patriarchal society in a way that even the most privileged of people can find some source of comfort in.

Starting with this poem, which all are untitled, I find it beautiful that Rupi Kaur has a way to enlighten and strengthen women, if not everyone through her words. It is interesting how she takes such a common question "what's the greatest lesson a woman should learn?", something that is usually answered with a rather proper answer, and make it into something so uplifting. Not only are her words light and relatable, her images are usually faceless or ambiguous enough that you are able to place yourself into these very simple feminine drawings.

Do you think that poems like this can help change the world we live in? Something so simple, can it change the way we view our bodies, our minds, and our souls?

Another poem by Ms. Kaur, brings chills down my spine. A simple idea to teach girls how to value themselves is exactly what makes Rupi Kaur a great feminist poet. Teaching these ideas to not only women, but every person who reads her book how to change the upcoming generations of women on how to value themselves.

All of Rupi Kaur's poems have a simple, yet powerful sting to them, causing the reader to almost be hit by how easy these ideas can be. Do you think the simplicity of her work is effective? What personal experiences can you project on to her work? Can poems like this truly help shape and change the future?
