Today, it is almost impossible to ignore Beyoncé Knowles, and after her last two albums it is impossible to ignore her strong political and feminist statement as an artist. Now the contention arises when you view Beyoncé's work as a whole, and analyze her interviews.
After Beyoncé's song ***Flawless debuted in 2014, there was some backlash that her dress, and previous work had enabled her from being a feminist as her song defines at the beginning. She did receive backlash for the lyrics "Respect that, bow down bitches". However, I don't find that to be the case. As the video shows, being a feminist is being able to be sexual, and be whatever you believe you want to be. Beyoncé is able to communicate feminist ideas to our culture through a non-threatening way for people to try to grasp.
Although not everyone believe's in Beyoncé's method of communicating her feminism, you cannot argue that it's powerful. With her projection, and demanding representation of the word itself, it truly demands the views attention. I think if nothing else, Beyoncé has caused a phenomenon of people trying to grasp the true meaning of feminism.
I will admit that even Beyoncé herself has previously shied away from the term feminist, she has recently embraced it fully. With her visual album Lemonade she embraces feminist ideals, through her clothing, song choice, and video style.
Do you believe that Beyoncé is doing her part in potraying the modern day feminist? Do you think her approach is too confrontational to relate to all ages and genders?
